Molopolo Beach: Lilo-an, Southern Leyte

The town of Lilo-an, Southern Leyte is a quiet small town locked in tall and steep mountain ranges. In fact, its mountains are the highest in all of Leyte. On the other side of this town are clear and blue waters with rich marine life. It shares the same seas as Surigao. In fact, Lilo-an port caters trips to Surigao City, making it the Visayas’ gateway to Mindanao.

The roads going to Lilo-an are lined with greens

Getting to Lilo-an can be quite tricky. We were coming from Cebu so we went for the Hilongos- Cebu route via Roble Shipping which departs everyday at 9 pm from Cebu. It reaches Hilongos by 2 am and from there, you have to take a bus going to Lilo-an. Fare ranges from 80- 160 php and travel time is approximately 2-3 hours.

One of the must sees in this place is the scenic steel bridge connecting the town to mainland Leyte. It reminds me of the bridge connecting Naval to mainland Leyte. The bridge, together with the view of the sea is breathtakingly fresh and new to the eyes. If you are one who’s looking for some peace and quiet, this is the place to be. It’s wary of meddling tourists.haha

Another place we visited and fell in love was the Molopolo Beach. I was amazed by how simple yet beautiful this long stretch of white beach is. The place reminds me of Siargao where locals get used to the beauty of their beaches that they don’t make a fuss out of it anymore. And I was a tourist who keeps on saying how nice it is to live in a place like this.haha

Entrance fee to the beach is only 5 pesos. Cottages are available at 250 pesos. It was a hide tide when we reached the place so we had to cross the sea in order to get to the cottages. Our lola, who was on a wheel chair, had to be taken on a pump boat to reach our cottage.

The water reaches the cottages on high tides. It is during low tides that you get to appreciate the long sandy white beach.

One can rent a boat for 300php and paddle to the nearby island and rock formations.

A videoke is available for rent at 1000 php (whole day). You can sing your hearts out since the whole place will be yours.

This won’t be my last in Lilo-an cause I know there are still spots and scenery yet to be discovered in this place =)
